Thailand, Malaysia and China qualify for Asian Games women’s competition
The Path to Aichi-Nagoya Secured
The landscape of women’s cricket in Asia has seen a major shake-up as Thailand, Malaysia and China qualify for Asian Games women’s competition. Following an intense qualifying tournament held in Kuala Lumpur from May 26 to May 31, these three nations have earned the right to compete at the 2026 Asian Games, which are set to be hosted in Aichi Prefecture and Nagoya, Japan, in September and October.
Tournament Recap: Road to Qualification
The qualifying event served as a high-stakes arena where teams fought to secure their place among the elite. Thailand emerged as a dominant force, topping Group A after securing victories over both Malaysia and Hong Kong. Malaysia, showing resilience, rebounded by defeating Hong Kong to secure a semi-final spot. They were joined by Group B winners Nepal and runners-up China.
The semi-finals proved to be the pivotal moment for qualification. Thailand showcased their superior bowling depth by dismissing China for just 53 runs, ultimately winning by 83 runs. Meanwhile, Malaysia produced a gritty performance against Nepal, successfully chasing down a target of 126 with two wickets and eight balls to spare.
The Final Standings and Third-Place Playoff
With the two finalists, Thailand and Malaysia, having already secured automatic qualification, the attention shifted to the third-place playoff. This match was crucial as it determined the final qualification slot. In a rain-affected encounter, China demonstrated composure to defeat Nepal by five wickets under the DLS method. Later that same day, the final between Thailand and Malaysia saw a clinical display from the Thais, who bowled Malaysia out for 54 and secured a comfortable nine-wicket victory.
Rising Stars on the International Stage
Thailand’s progression continues to be a highlight of Associate cricket. Having previously participated in the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia, the team is currently ranked 12th in the ICC women’s T20I rankings. Their consistent performance suggests they will be a formidable opponent in Japan. Malaysia and China, ranked 28th and 42nd respectively, will view this opportunity as a massive step forward in their cricketing development journey.
Asian Games Format and Broader Context
The women’s cricket event at the 2026 Asian Games will feature eight teams competing in the T20 format. The field is already bolstered by the inclusion of regional powerhouses: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, who all gain automatic qualification as Full Members. Japan, as the host nation, rounds out the list of participants.
While the women’s bracket is now set, the men’s qualifying tournament remains ongoing. The men’s competition will include the five regional Full Members—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka—alongside Japan and four teams emerging from a competitive qualifier involving Nepal, China, Malaysia, Qatar, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Oman, and Singapore. The inclusion of these emerging nations ensures that the Asian Games will continue to be a vital platform for the growth and visibility of cricket across the continent.
