Ryan Rickelton Hails Rohit Sharma as India’s Greatest After MI Victory vs LSG
A Masterclass at Wankhede: Mumbai Indians Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
In a high-stakes encounter that felt like a final for both sides, the Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a scintillating performance at the Wankhede Stadium, defeating the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in a match that kept their IPL 2026 playoff aspirations breathing. With both teams languishing at the bottom of the table, the pressure was immense, yet it was the brilliance of the opening duo that ultimately tilted the balance in favor of the hosts.
The LSG Innings: A Game of Two Halves
LSG, under pressure to perform, started with intent. Despite losing an early wicket, Mitchell Marsh and the explosive Nicholas Pooran went on the offensive, dismantling the MI bowling attack during the powerplay to reach 90/1. The duo stitched together a remarkable 93-run partnership, with Pooran contributing a blistering 63 off just 21 deliveries. However, once the momentum shifted, the MI bowlers clawed their way back, restricting LSG to a final total of 228/5, thanks to late contributions from Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh.
The Rickelton-Sharma Show
The chase required a strong foundation, and that is exactly what Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton provided. The pair put on a masterclass, reaching 71 runs within the powerplay and laying a massive 143-run partnership. While both men were disappointed to miss out on their respective centuries—falling for 84 and 83 respectively—they had effectively broken the back of the LSG bowling unit. Naman Dhir and Suryakumar Yadav ensured the momentum remained intact, guiding Mumbai to a crucial victory.
Rickelton’s Glowing Tribute to the Hitman
Following the match, Player of the Match Ryan Rickelton was full of praise for his opening partner. In a heartfelt post-match interview, the South African batter didn’t mince words regarding the stature of the former India captain. ‘One of Mumbai’s greatest, one of India’s greatest,’ Rickelton said of Rohit Sharma. ‘I really enjoy spending time out there. We’re fortunate to get the wickets here. The Wankhede has been really good.’
Rickelton highlighted how the partnership flourished due to mutual understanding. ‘We’ve been able to dovetail quite nicely and put bowlers under pressure at the right times and help each other out along the way,’ he added. The ability to rotate strike and exploit the Wankhede’s unique pace and bounce was key to the partnership’s success.
Adapting to the Wankhede Conditions
Reflecting on his own form, Rickelton admitted that the Wankhede pitch feels surprisingly familiar, drawing parallels to the Wanderers in Johannesburg. ‘Rahul Sanghvi was telling me that my game suits this ground. Coming from Johannesburg… you’re getting a lot of similar pace and bounce. I didn’t believe it when he was telling me what this pitch would turn out to be for me, but there’s nice pace in it, so you get great value for shots.’
He also noted the evolving nature of the IPL, where chasing high totals has become the norm. ‘The IPL’s ridiculous in the way that these chases are being done nowadays. Like Surya said, if you have a good start, it just sets the platform. And I think that’s the trend in this team.’
Looking Ahead
While the road to the playoffs remains difficult, this win provides a significant morale boost for the Mumbai Indians. The chemistry between a veteran like Rohit Sharma and an emerging star like Ryan Rickelton could be the catalyst for a late-tournament surge. For LSG, however, the defeat leaves their qualification path in tatters, with the team now needing a series of miracles to remain relevant in the 2026 campaign.
As the tournament progresses, the reliance on high-impact starts and the mentorship of experienced legends like Rohit will continue to be the cornerstone of the Mumbai Indians’ strategy as they fight to climb up the points table.
