Ruturaj Gaikwad Fined After CSK’s IPL 2026 Elimination
A Disappointing End to the Campaign
The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has come to a bitter and premature end. In a must-win scenario, the franchise suffered a crushing 89-run defeat at the hands of the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on Thursday, May 21. This loss effectively finalized their elimination from the tournament, marking the end of a challenging season for the five-time champions.
With this defeat, Chennai Super Kings became the third team to be officially knocked out of playoff contention in IPL 2026. They join the Rishabh Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and the Mumbai Indians in exiting the race early, leaving the remaining franchises to battle for the coveted top-four spots.
Dominance by the Gujarat Titans
The match in Ahmedabad proved to be a one-sided affair as the Gujarat Titans asserted their dominance in every facet of the game. After winning the toss, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad opted to field first, a decision that backfired as the Titans’ top order dismantled the Chennai bowling attack from the very first delivery.
Sai Sudharsan and captain Shubman Gill set the tone with a massive 125-run opening partnership that laid a rock-solid foundation. Sudharsan continued his sensational form, contributing a brilliant 84 off 53 balls, while Gill provided the necessary aggression with 64 runs off 37 balls, maintaining a striking rate of 172.97. The onslaught was perfectly punctuated by Jos Buttler, who provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 57 off just 27 deliveries, propelling the Gujarat Titans to a commanding total of 229/4 in their 20 overs.
In response, the Chennai Super Kings faced a nightmare start. The momentum shifted immediately when wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was dismissed for a golden duck on the opening ball of the chase, falling to a sharp delivery by Mohammed Siraj. While Shivam Dube provided a glimmer of hope with a valiant 47 off 17 balls, the lack of support from the rest of the lineup meant the pursuit was effectively over before it began. The collective bowling effort from the Titans, led by Mohammed Siraj, Kagiso Rabada, and Rashid Khan, ensured a comfortable victory.
BCCI Penalties for Slow Over-Rate
To compound the frustration of their elimination, the Chennai Super Kings faced further repercussions from the BCCI. Following the conclusion of the match, it was confirmed that the team had been found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate. Under the stringent guidelines of the IPL Code of Conduct, this was identified as the team’s second such offence of the season.
As per the official statement released on Friday, Ruturaj Gaikwad, in his capacity as captain, was slapped with a fine of Rs 24 lakh. The financial penalties extended to the rest of the squad as well. Every member of the playing XI, including the impact player, was fined either Rs 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever was lower.
The statement clarified: “Ruturaj Gaikwad, Captain, Chennai Super Kings, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 66 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. As this was his team’s second offence (first offence in Match 18) of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gaikwad was fined INR 24 lakhs.”
This is not the first time CSK has faced disciplinary action this season. The team committed a similar over-rate infraction during their encounter against the Delhi Capitals on April 11. As the dust settles on their 2026 campaign, the management and the leadership group will surely be looking to address both their on-field execution and their adherence to match regulations as they prepare for the future.
