Ravichandran Ashwin has delivered a blunt and revealing analysis of the Mumbai Indians disastrous IPL 2026 campaign, identifying on-field performances under duress as the core reason behind their collapse.

Historic Decline of a Five-Time Champion

Once the most dominant franchise in the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians slipped to near the bottom of the points table in IPL 2026. With only four wins from 14 matches and a net run rate that spared them last place, the Hardik Pandya-led side became a shadow of the team that reached Qualifier 2 just a season earlier.

Their fall has been steep. From winning five titles between 2013 and 2020, MI have now gone six consecutive seasons without lifting the trophy a drought that continues to deepen.

Bumrahs Unthinkable Struggles

According to Ashwin, the most startling factor was the performance of Jasprit Bumrah, arguably the teams most reliable weapon in past seasons.

In 13 matches, Bumrah managed a mere 4 wickets at a staggering average of 102.50 the worst bowling average ever recorded by any player in a single IPL season where they played the full campaign.

This is the first time in the history of IPL that a bowler has averaged over 100 after playing the full season, and thats Jasprit Bumrah. I dont think anybody would have believed me if I had said this before the season, said Ashwin during his YouTube analysis.

Reports indicated that Bumrah was playing through injury, which may explain the dip in pace, bounce, and control that have defined his career.

Trent Boult and the End of an Era?

Trent Boult, signed for INR 12.50 crores in 2025 as a marquee pacer, also failed to deliver. With just 2 wickets in five matches at an economy of over 11 and an average of 94, the New Zealander was eventually dropped from the XI.

Ashwin suggested that MI might release Boult to free up salary cap space, despite the franchises stated philosophy of One Family.

I think they will release Trent Boult to free up their purse. That I am very sure of. However, Ashwin acknowledged the difficulty of overhauling a squad filled with high-profile, experienced players.

Hardik Pandyas Leadership and Form in Crisis

Captain Hardik Pandya also had a subdued season. With the bat, he scored 206 runs in 10 matches at an average of 22.89 and a strike rate of 138. With the ball, he took just 4 wickets at nearly 65 runs apiece and an economy close to 11.5.

Ashwin pointed to fatigue or minor injuries as possible causes for the dip in Pandyas famed all-round output.

Hardik used to bat at No. 4 and No. 5 for Gujarat Titans. He used to take down the spinners. But this time, it looks like he has a small problem with the hard length ball. I dont know why. It could be fatigue or injury, Ashwin observed.

Injury Woes Added to the Misery

Mumbais campaign was further derailed by injuries. Rohit Sharma missed crucial matches due to toe and hamstring issues, while Mitchell Santner and Quinton de Kock were ruled out for the entire season.

What Lies Ahead for IPL 2027?

Looking forward, Ashwin offered a cautious outlook. He refused to predict a bounce-back, suggesting that the team still looked disjointed.

This Mumbai Indians team seemed a bit strange. It cannot be easy. With the quality they have, maybe they can play well next year. But I wont be surprised if they also find it hard for one more year. It looks like a lot of people are not at their best.

For a franchise built on sustained excellence, the IPL 2026 chapter was a horror story. If Ashwins diagnosis is correct, the path to revival will require more than just luck it will demand bold decisions, smart recruitment, and the return of peak form from its stars.
