Sunrisers Hyderabad Secure Playoff Spot Amid Leadership Transition

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have officially locked in their position in the IPL 2026 playoffs following a crucial victory over the Chennai Super Kings in Chennai. While the franchise has successfully crossed the first major hurdle of the tournament, there is still significant work to be done. SRH remains focused on securing a finish in the top two of the points table, which would grant them two opportunities to secure a place in the highly anticipated IPL final.

A major talking point of SRH’s successful campaign has been the seamless transition of leadership. Regular captain Pat Cummins recently opened up about how the team handled the captaincy split in the early part of the season, giving immense credit to Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan for stepping up in his absence.

The Road Back: Pat Cummins’ Injury Struggles

To understand the dynamics of SRH’s leadership this season, one must look back at the challenging journey Pat Cummins faced leading up to IPL 2026. The premier Australian fast bowler suffered a severe lower back lumbar stress injury in July last year. This injury severely restricted his playing time, rendering him barely able to play any competitive cricket for the remainder of 2025.

During his recovery period, Cummins was limited to playing just one match for the rest of the calendar year. While he managed to feature in the third Ashes Test against England last December, he was forced to sit out the other four Tests of the series as well as all subsequent limited-overs fixtures. Furthermore, the persistent injury prevented him from participating in the T20 World Cup held in India and Sri Lanka earlier this year.

When Cummins finally arrived for the IPL 2026 season, he was still actively working his way back to full fitness. Consequently, the team management scheduled him to play only the second half of the tournament. To date, Cummins has featured in 6 of SRH’s 13 matches this season, leaving a massive leadership void during the first half of the campaign.

Ishan Kishan’s Rise to the Captaincy

With Cummins unavailable for the initial phase of the tournament, the SRH management turned to Ishan Kishan. The decision to appoint Kishan as the stand-in captain was heavily influenced by his stellar performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. In that domestic tournament, Kishan led Jharkhand to the trophy while finishing as the highest run-getter, a feat that also paved the way for his comeback into the Indian national team for the T20 World Cup.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event in New Delhi, Cummins expressed his complete confidence in Kishan’s leadership abilities and clarified his role in the decision-making process.

“We had a few good options,” Cummins explained. “He (Kishan) has had a great domestic season as captain. I got asked a question on stand-in captaincy, and I said ‘Oh, Ishan would be great, the boys love him’. He was awesome. I let him do his thing. I didn’t get too involved, but I was there if he needed me. He knows how to captain well, so I stayed out of his way.”

Strong Backing from Franchise Owners

In addition to praising Kishan, Cummins spoke highly of the Sunrisers Hyderabad ownership group. Reflecting on how the owners reacted after the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in the previous season, Cummins noted that their support remained unwavering.

“The owners have been great,” Cummins said. “The first half of last year, I don’t think we played anywhere near our potential. We won our last three or four games last season, which showed that we were onto something with the style we wanted to play. Us at our best are right up there with any other team.”

He added that the disappointment of the previous season acted as a catalyst for their current run. “We came into this season knowing that last season was as bad as we could play. A couple of new players, too, have bought into the aggressive style that brought us success.”

By the Numbers: The Captaincy Split in IPL 2026

The split captaincy structure has proven highly effective for Sunrisers Hyderabad, keeping them firmly in contention for the title. Under Ishan Kishan’s guidance, the team navigated a difficult start to the season, losing three of their first four matches. However, Kishan engineered a brilliant turnaround, leading the team to three consecutive victories. In total, SRH won 4 out of 7 matches under Kishan’s captaincy.

When Pat Cummins returned to take over the reins, he extended the team’s winning streak by two more matches. Since then, SRH has followed an alternating pattern of wins and losses. Under Cummins’ captaincy, the team has registered 4 victories in 6 matches. Combined, the two leaders have guided SRH to a highly successful campaign as they prepare for the high-stakes playoff matches ahead.
