IPL 2026 Playoff Picture Becomes Clearer

The intensity of the Indian Premier League 2026 season has reached a fever pitch as match number 63 concluded with a definitive shift in the standings. Following the qualification of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the playoff race saw two more heavyweights, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Gujarat Titans (GT), officially lock in their spots. The confirmation came after a clinical performance by SRH against the Chennai Super Kings at the iconic Chepauk Stadium.

SRH Clinch Spot with Victory in Chennai

In a contest that carried significant weight, CSK set a competitive target of 180 runs in the first innings. The chase was far from a walk in the park for the Sunrisers, who faced early pressure from the Chennai bowling attack. However, the composed partnership between Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen proved to be the turning point. The duo held their nerves under the lights, guiding their side to a comfortable victory with six balls to spare.

This crucial win propelled Sunrisers Hyderabad to 16 points from 13 matches, securing them the third spot on the points table with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.350. By doing so, they not only solidified their own path but also ensured that the Gujarat Titans, who share the same tally of 16 points but hold a superior NRR of +0.400, would proceed to the next stage.

The Mathematical Reality for Other Contenders

With SRH and GT confirmed, the playoff landscape has become much more exclusive. Mathematically, the remaining teams in the league can no longer catch the top three. Punjab Kings are capped at a maximum of 15 points, while the Rajasthan Royals can reach a ceiling of 14 points. With the Chennai Super Kings stuck at 12 points after 13 games, and both Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders unable to reach the 16-point threshold, the trio of RCB, GT, and SRH are safely out of reach.

The focus now shifts entirely to the fourth and final playoff spot. The race is currently heating up between the Punjab Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, who remain the primary contenders. Kolkata Knight Riders still harbor an outside chance, but their path requires a perfect run in their final two fixtures alongside a series of favorable results from other matches.

The Battle for the Top Two

While the pressure of qualification has been lifted for the top three, the race for the top two positions remains fierce. Finishing in the top two is a highly coveted advantage, as it grants entry into Qualifier 1. The winner of this clash earns an immediate ticket to the final, while the loser is handed a second chance via Qualifier 2. Currently, RCB appears to be the favorite for a top-two finish, but the final league fixtures will be decisive.

Gujarat Titans have one league fixture remaining against CSK on May 21, while SRH are set for a mouth-watering encounter against the defending champions, RCB, on May 22 at the Uppal Stadium in Hyderabad. These matches will ultimately determine the seeding for the knockout stage.

CSK’s Complicated Road Ahead

For the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings, the situation has turned dire. Their defeat at Chepauk has left their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. To have any chance of qualification, CSK must secure a victory in their final game against GT. Even then, they are reliant on external factors: they need the Punjab Kings to fail to reach 14 points, while also hoping for the Rajasthan Royals and KKR to drop points in their respective outings. Given their current Net Run Rate, even a win may not suffice unless it is a high-margin victory that significantly bolsters their statistical standing.
