Hardik Pandya Clarifies Rohit Sharma’s Availability Ahead of MI vs SRH Clash

The atmosphere at the Wankhede Stadium was electric as the Mumbai Indians (MI) prepared to face off against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Match 41 of the IPL 2026 season. However, the primary point of discussion among fans and analysts remained the fitness of the legendary former skipper, Rohit Sharma. During the toss, current MI captain Hardik Pandya provided a definitive update that puts a temporary halt to the speculation surrounding Rohit’s immediate return.

The Injury Update: When Will Rohit Sharma Return?

Rohit Sharma has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during a previous encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). While there was hope that he might return for the match against SRH—especially after yesterday’s press conference suggested a final decision would be made at the toss—Hardik Pandya confirmed that the veteran batter is not yet ready for competitive action.

Speaking during the toss, Hardik stated: “Rohit’s is gonna take a couple of more games. He’s been trying, it’s not up to exactly where he would want, so not available for the team.”

Hardik further emphasized the team’s collective goal, adding, “Absolutely (on his form). We just want to kind of come out and play the best cricket I know as well. That will definitely help the group and the team.” This indicates that while the team misses Rohit’s presence, the management is prioritizing his long-term fitness over a rushed comeback that could risk a more severe relapse.

A Setback in Momentum for the Former Captain

The injury comes at a frustrating time for Rohit Sharma. In the current IPL 2026 campaign, Rohit had already showcased his class, scoring 137 runs from four innings. His tournament started on a high note with a commanding fifty in the very first game, signaling that he was in tremendous form and ready to anchor the MI batting lineup.

Despite the setback, there are silver linings. Reports indicate that Rohit has been active in the nets and has been batting well. However, the gap between “net fitness” and “match fitness” is significant, and the medical team believes he is not yet 100% ready to handle the rigors of a T20 match, particularly the explosive movements required in the field.

Squad Shuffles and Injury Woes for Mumbai Indians

The absence of Rohit Sharma has led to a series of tactical changes in the MI playing XI. Initially, Quinton de Kock was brought in to replace Rohit and fill the void at the top of the order. However, the injury bug has continued to haunt the franchise. De Kock has also been ruled out of tonight’s game due to a wrist injury.

As a result, Mumbai Indians have had to pivot once again, with Ryan Rickelton stepping into the squad to replace De Kock. This instability in the opening pair adds an extra layer of challenge for Hardik Pandya as he seeks to maintain consistency in the team’s performance.

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Tactical Approach

On the opposing side, SRH captain Pat Cummins has also made strategic adjustments. Opting to bowl first, Cummins highlighted the condition of the Wankhede pitch, noting its current state.

“It looks like there might be a little bit of tackiness in the wicket, so happy (to bowl first),” Cummins remarked. He urged his players to remain focused and avoid overthinking the game, stating, “It is pretty high scoring normally, so just try and execute skills… this pitch might ask of something different of you this game, and just go with a clear mind.”

SRH has introduced Harsh Dubey into the lineup in place of Shivang Kumar, a move Cummins believes is backed by his own observations while bowling on the surface.

MI Impact Players and Strategic Depth

To navigate the match and compensate for the missing stars, Mumbai Indians have named a versatile list of Impact Players. The options available to Hardik Pandya tonight include:

  • Mayank Rawat
  • Raghu Sharma
  • Shardul Thakur
  • Krish Bhagat
  • Raj Bawa

With Rohit Sharma expected to miss at least a couple more games, the onus falls on the current top order and these impact players to deliver. MI will be looking to secure a victory to keep their momentum alive while their talismanic former captain continues his road to recovery.
