Dinesh Karthik Reveals How Virat Kohli Inspired His RCB Coaching Role
The Architect of a Dream: How Dinesh Karthik Transitioned from Finisher to Mentor
The journey of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has always been one of the most talked-about sagas in the Indian Premier League (IPL). For nearly two decades, the franchise and its loyal fanbase lived on hope, often coming agonizingly close but never quite reaching the summit. That changed in 2025. While the players on the field deserve every bit of the glory, a significant portion of that success can be traced back to a pivotal decision made in the preceding year: appointing the legendary Dinesh Karthik as the team’s mentor and batting coach.
Karthik, who had been the heartbeat of the RCB middle order between 2022 and 2024, decided to hang up his boots after a stellar playing career. However, his departure from the playing eleven didn’t mean a departure from the family. In a move that surprised many but felt inherently right, Karthik transitioned immediately into the support staff. This decision, as it turns out, was the final piece of the puzzle that led RCB to their maiden IPL title in 2025.
The Seed Sown by Mo Bobat
The transition from a high-octane playing career to a coaching role is rarely straightforward. For the 40-year-old Karthik, the seed of this new chapter was sown by RCB’s Director of Cricket, Mo Bobat. Speaking on the RCB Podcast, Karthik opened up about the deep bond he shares with the Englishman and how their relationship formed the foundation of his coaching stint.
“It manifested when, as I was finishing in 2024, Mo asked me if I would be keen or interested. I was in the middle of the tournament, and it was a very different IPL season—we had lost six out of seven or seven out of eight games—and we had a mountain to climb. To be fair, nobody gave us a chance,” Karthik recalled. Despite the pressure of the 2024 season, Bobat saw something in Karthik that went beyond his ability to hit a ball over the ropes. He saw a leader, a strategist, and a mentor.
Karthik emphasized the trust he placed in Bobat’s vision. “I trust Mo a lot – I’ve grown very fond of him and have a very good equation with him. He didn’t convince me, but he showed me exactly what it would look like and told me it’s a good place to be, considering where I was in my career. I completely trusted him, and I dropped the hat,” he added.
The Virat Kohli Endorsement
While Bobat provided the blueprint, it was a conversation with the face of the franchise, Virat Kohli, that truly sealed the deal for Karthik. In the world of cricket, few opinions carry as much weight as Kohli’s, and for Karthik, having the respect of a contemporary like Virat was the ultimate validation.
“I remember speaking to Virat again, and he said, ‘You should do it. You would probably fit in quite nicely.’ That’s all I needed,” Karthik shared with a sense of gratitude. “Someone like Virat has respect for you, and it is a challenge.” Kohli’s encouragement wasn’t just a friendly nudge; it was an acknowledgement that Karthik’s cricketing intelligence was exactly what the RCB dugout needed to navigate the pressures of a championship-winning season.
A Historic Victory in IPL 2025
The fruits of this collaboration were borne in the most spectacular fashion during the IPL 2025 season. Under the guidance of Head Coach Andy Flower and the mentorship of Karthik, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru marched to the final against the Punjab Kings. In a nail-biting encounter, RCB’s strategy and composure—traits Karthik had been instilling throughout the season—came to the fore.
The bowling unit, led by the experienced duo of Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, produced a masterclass in death bowling. Defending a competitive total, they restricted the Punjab Kings to just six runs short of the target. As the final wicket fell, the drought ended, and the Royal Challengers were finally crowned champions. It was a poetic moment for Karthik, who had given his all as a player and now witnessed the ultimate success from the sidelines.
Building an Indian Core in Coaching
One of the key reasons behind bringing Karthik on board was the desire to have a strong Indian presence in the coaching staff. Andy Flower, according to Karthik, was particularly excited about the prospect. “He [Mo] also said Andy was very happy, and they were in a place where they felt a couple of Indian coaching staff would help as well,” Karthik noted. This blend of international tactical expertise and local understanding proved to be the winning formula for RCB.
Dinesh Karthik’s story is a reminder that the end of one journey is often just the beginning of another. By listening to the advice of friends like Virat Kohli and trusting the vision of mentors like Mo Bobat, Karthik found a new way to contribute to the sport he loves, ultimately helping deliver a trophy that a city had dreamed of for decades.
