The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has formally urged the Union Sports Ministry to intervene in the conduct of the IPL 2026 playoffs. CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal has proposed that the BCCI should consider reducing the number of host venues and conducting matches behind closed doors. The primary rationale behind this request is the rising cost of fuel and the broader geopolitical situation affecting energy supplies in West Asia, which has a ripple effect on global and domestic fuel prices.
Goyal emphasized that these measures would serve national interests by significantly curbing the tournament’s overall carbon footprint. By limiting travel and minimizing the surge in mass transit associated with match days, the CTI argues that the nation could save millions of liters of petrol and diesel.
Data-Driven Concerns Regarding Aviation Fuel
The argument presented by the trade body rests on specific figures regarding aviation fuel usage. According to their assessment, chartered aircraft such as Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s consume between 2,400 and 3,000 liters of aviation turbine fuel per hour. With franchises frequently traveling between cities, the total fuel consumption per team is substantial, with estimates suggesting nearly 50,000 to 70,000 liters of fuel used per franchise across approximately 10 flights throughout the season.
Furthermore, the CTI highlighted that each IPL match brings roughly 50,000 spectators to a venue. The logistical challenge of moving these fans to and from stadiums creates additional pressure on local transport infrastructure, further contributing to fuel consumption.
The BCCI Stance: Accountability and Compliance
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has addressed these growing calls with a clear and professional approach. While acknowledging that independent organizations may have varying perspectives on the management of such a large-scale event, Dhumal reiterated that the BCCI operates under the guidance and policies of the Government of India.
“So far, there has not been any communication to the BCCI to my knowledge. Independent agencies might have their views on certain things, but we are accountable to the Government of India. If anything comes from the government, we will look into it and certainly adhere to the directions,” Dhumal stated in a recent interview. As of now, the BCCI has not announced any official modifications to the playoff schedule, which remains slated to begin on May 26.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have secured their spot in the playoffs following a decisive victory over the Punjab Kings (PBKS).
