The Path to 2027: Kohli and Rohit’s Future in Focus

The conversation surrounding the longevity of two of India’s greatest cricketers, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, has intensified as the 2027 ODI World Cup looms on the horizon. Scheduled to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, the tournament represents a significant milestone. By the time the event commences, Kohli will be approaching 39, while Rohit will have moved past 40. Despite the age factor, veteran spinner R Ashwin believes that the possibility of their inclusion is very much alive.

Reflecting on the dynamics required for such a long-term commitment, Ashwin likened the process to a marriage. He suggested that while personal fitness and current form are non-negotiable prerequisites, the ultimate success of this endeavor relies heavily on the ‘good vibes’ and support emanating from the team management. According to Ashwin, when players sense that the leadership genuinely wants them to succeed, their commitment levels often double.

The Importance of Management Support

Ashwin, speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s video show, articulated a straightforward view on the matter: “In my experience of how these things pan out, it’s pretty straightforward: if the management wants both of them at the 50-over World Cup in South Africa, and if there is enough energy around it, it’s very much possible to keep them on the park and utilise their experience. But if there is a thinking that it might steer the other way, the players will be under duress.”

The veteran offspinner stressed that institutional support is crucial, especially as athletes age. He noted that specialized rehab programs and a structure built around their specific needs could facilitate their participation. However, he warned that any lingering doubt or lack of faith from the selectors or management could make the path significantly harder for the duo. Injuries at that age are a reality, but with the right support system, they can be managed effectively.

Adapting to the Physical Demands

Ashwin acknowledged that the body’s recovery process changes as a player crosses 32. “The body is not the same as it was when it was 35 and below,” he explained. “At every stage, you need to adapt. It is like a marriage; both of them bring something to the table.”

Despite the physical toll, both players have demonstrated remarkable consistency. Since 2025, following their retirements from T20Is and Tests, they have remained at the forefront of India’s run-scoring charts in ODIs. Virat Kohli, in particular, has maintained an exceptional level, accumulating 891 runs at an average of 68.53, featuring four centuries and five fifties. Rohit Sharma has also proven his worth, contributing 711 runs at an average of 44.43, bolstered by two centuries and four fifties.

The Motivation for Silverware

Rohit Sharma’s desire to claim the 50-over World Cup remains a massive driving factor. Ashwin noted, “He doesn’t have a 50-over World Cup in his kitbag yet. I think he wants to go there to the 2027 World Cup and showcase that, and win yet another silverware for himself and for the nation.”

With roughly 20 ODIs scheduled before early 2027, the team has a clear window to refine its strategy. Although Kohli is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and Rohit is working to maintain his fitness after his own recent injury struggles, their value to the team cannot be understated. Ashwin emphasized that for an away campaign in South Africa, the experience of these two legends is an asset that India must extract as much as possible.

In conclusion, the decision to field Kohli and Rohit in 2027 will be a collective one. If the synergy between the players and the administration remains positive, their presence will undoubtedly strengthen the Indian lineup, offering a blend of experience and tactical acumen that is difficult to replicate.
