Josh Inglis: The Bright Spot in LSG’s Difficult IPL 2026 Campaign

A Season of Struggle for Lucknow Super Giants

The 2026 Indian Premier League season was undeniably one to forget for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). After enduring consecutive underwhelming campaigns in 2024 and 2025, where they finished at seventh place, the team hit a new low this year by ending the tournament at the bottom of the points table. The post-mortem for the season has already begun, with global director of cricket Tom Moody emphasizing that the franchise is in desperate need of a total reset.

Reflecting on the campaign, Moody noted that the fundamental issue for the side was the inability of the batting and bowling units to click simultaneously. While the bowling attack showed promise during the early phases of the tournament, the batting lineup struggled significantly to provide the dynamic starts required in the modern T20 format. The middle order failed to fire, leaving the team in a constant state of flux.

The Emergence of Josh Inglis

Amidst the gloom of a last-place finish, one individual stood out as a clear success story: Australian batter Josh Inglis. His arrival at the franchise came under unusual circumstances. After parting ways with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) due to a scheduling clash regarding his wedding, Inglis found a home at LSG for the final five games of the season. He did not waste his opportunity, amassing 266 runs at a blistering strike rate of 186.01, including three match-defining half-centuries.

To put his performance into perspective, Inglis’ total output in just five matches was the third-highest for the entire franchise during the season, trailing only Mitchell Marsh (563) and Rishabh Pant (312). Crucially, he outperformed established stars such as Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran, both of whom played significantly more matches. His ability to score rapidly while maintaining high-impact consistency was an anomaly in a struggling LSG batting order.

Why Inglis is a Modern T20 Asset

Cricket experts have been quick to praise the versatility of the Australian wicketkeeper-batter. Ambati Rayudu, speaking on ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, highlighted that Inglis is perfectly suited to the demands of subcontinent conditions. Unlike some overseas batters who rely on a singular method, Inglis has demonstrated an ability to play all around the wicket. He handles spin exceptionally well, executes the lap shot with precision, and possesses the power to clear the straight boundaries.

Mark Boucher also weighed in on the tactical advantage Inglis provides. He noted that there is a “smartness” to the way Inglis approaches his innings. By constantly moving around the crease, he forces bowlers to adjust their lines and lengths, effectively dismantling defensive fields. His capacity to hit over the top when fielders are brought up is a testament to his adaptability. While other players might fall into the trap of being one-dimensional, Inglis keeps the opposition guessing.

The Road Ahead for LSG

As the franchise prepares for the 2027 season, the front office has hinted at massive structural changes. Tom Moody has confirmed that the team will review everything, including the captaincy of Rishabh Pant. There is a sense of urgency to fix the top-order issues that plagued them throughout 2026. Given that Inglis struck at a phenomenal 229 in the powerplay during his stint, he is widely viewed as a foundational piece for the team’s reconstruction.

While the franchise is expected to undergo a significant “shuffle” in personnel before the next auction, the partnership between Inglis and his compatriot Mitchell Marsh is something the management will likely aim to preserve. If LSG can successfully overhaul their structure and surround players like Inglis with consistent performers, the next season could potentially see a reversal of their recent fortunes. For now, Inglis stands as the singular bright spot in an otherwise dark chapter for the Lucknow Super Giants, providing a blueprint for the kind of aggressive, intelligent cricket the team desperately needs to survive and thrive in the IPL.
